Lead poisoning is entirely preventable. The key is stopping children from coming into contact with lead and treating children who have been poisoned by lead. The Lead Program is devoted to preventing and reducing the risk of childhood lead poisoning in Delaware County.

What is the most common source of lead exposure?
The most common source of lead is cracking, peeling, chipping or otherwise deteriorating lead-based paint and dust particles. Lead-based paint on windows, doors and other areas where surfaces rub against each other create dust and may cause lead particles to be released into the environment.
Homeowners, contractors, landlords, and tenants:
Some renovation and remodeling activities can increase the risk of lead exposure. Homes built before 1978 contain lead-based paint, often under newer paint. If you disturb the painted surface with a repair project or are planning to renovate or remodel an older home, it’s important to do the job safely. Children and pregnant women should stay away from work areas until the area is clean.
Blood Lead Testing:
The New York State Department of Health recommends every child be tested at one and two years of age and assessed for risk of lead poisoning at each well-child visit up until 6 years of age. If your child has not been tested for lead, you should check with your health care provider or call the Health Department at 607-832-5200.

Assistance is available for blood lead testing to residents with no insurance.
