Avian (Bird) Flu

Avian Flu, also referred to as Bird flu, H5N1, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) or H5, is a contagious respiratory illness in birds caused by a virus. The virus can infect wild birds and poultry such as chickens, turkeys, pheasants, quail, domestic ducks, geese, and guinea fowl. Waterfowl are especially at risk.

The CDC assess the risk for the general public is low. Having a job or recreation, such as poultry farming, animal care workers, or have a backyard bird flock, that exposes you to infected animals increases your risk.
