Prohibited Items

There are several categories of items that are prohibited from being accepted at the Solid Waste Management Center (SWMC). If you are not sure if what you have is prohibited, please call us before bringing it to the SWMC: 607-865-5805.

Various bottles of liquid chemicals.
Various paint cans.

PROHIBITED MATERIALS

  • Ashes & burn barrels: extinguish & bury on-site.
  • Large dead animals & carcasses (excluding deer & elk): lime & bury animals/carcasses on property, contract with rendering company, or contact Delaware County Cornell Cooperative Extension for information on carcass composting.
  • Hazardous or toxic materials (including fluorescent light bulbs & ballasts; mercury lights & bulbs; sodium lights & bulbs; pesticides, hazardous liquids; corrosives, solvents; radioactive or regulated medical wastes): defined by State, Federal, & DPW guidelines. Contract with hazardous waste hauler or bring them to our Annual Clean Sweep.
  • Industrial wastes: contact DPW Solid Waste Division at 607-865-5805.
  • Junk vehicle, body, or chassis: bring to scrap dealer.
  • Liquids of any kind (including paint that is still liquid): contact your local wastewater treatment facility, look for Paintcare recycling & drop-off locations, or bring paint to our Annual Clean Sweep.
  • Mixed loads of material: all loads of waste & recyclables must be delivered in appropriate separated categories.
  • Out-of-county wastes: Delaware County generated waste only.
  • Radioactive wastes
  • Regulated medical waste
