Delaware County Landfill

The Delaware County Department of Public Works’ Solid Waste Management Center’s (SWMC) municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill opened in 1977 and received a variance in 2021 from New York State to greatly improve and slightly expand the landfill.

Landfill

The MSW landfill opened in 1977. In the 1980s, the SWMC began service to town transfer stations. In 1992, the construction and demolition (C&D) landfill opened.

Improvements to the landfill cells have been continuous. In 1995, the first double composite landfill liner was installed. Cell 6 opened in 2006, and a landfill expansion permit modification was received in 2021.

Given current fill rates, the landfill has approximately 60 years of service ahead.

Household Waste

Household waste is sent through the industrial composter, where biodegradable materials such as food scraps, paperboard, and toilet tissue, are composted. Materials that are non-compostable, such as plastic bags and small pieces of plastic or metal, are separated out and landfilled.

Municipal composting, when combined with recycling, is critically important to reducing the amount of materials that are landfilled in Delaware County.

Landfill space is limited at the Solid Waste Management Center, and once full, a new site must be found which can be socially, fiscally, and environmentally costly.

Composting and recycling efforts help to extend landfill life, however it’s also important to consider reducing incoming materials while also increasing correct recycling behaviors.

Construction & Demolition Waste

It is important to separate C&D waste, including large and bulky items and tanglers such as hoses, tarps, and nets, from household garbage. These items should never enter our compost facility as they can and do damage the equipment. C&D waste is used as a temporary landfill cover which helps to prevent animal foragers and material being blown around by wind.
